Crane Specifications
Based on the Reddit post by u/67triumphGT6.
-
Lifting Capacity:
1 ton hoist (CM Lodestar), mounted to a top-running trolley.
-
Dimensions:
Span: 44' (across the shop)
Length: 60' (down the shop)
-
Clearance:
Max hook height is just under 13' with 14' ceilings.
-
Main Girders (Bridge):
W14x34 I-beams.
-
Runway Beams (Rails):
W6x20 I-beams.
-
Support Posts:
5" x 5" x 3/16" square steel tubing.
-
Bridge Drive System:
Motorized via a 1hp 3-phase motor with a 10:1 gearbox, turning a 44' drive shaft.
-
Hoist Trolley Drive:
Non-powered (manual push/pull along the bridge).
-
Power & Control:
The 3-phase motor is powered by a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) that converts 120V 1-phase AC to 240V 3-phase AC. This allows for adjustable acceleration, deceleration, and speed.
-
Wireless Operation:
The original wired pendant for the hoist and bridge was reverse-engineered. An Arduino microcontroller and Solid-State Relays (SSRs) were used to create a custom wireless remote control system.
Owner's Note on Engineering: "The trade off with a top runner is that torsional load buckling becomes a concern, but 1 ton is far below the threshold. Hard to see in the pics, but there's a horizontal truss tying the beams together to increase LTB [Lateral Torsional Buckling] resistance."
